Choreographer-director Farah Khan is judging a television reality show Joh Jeeta Woh Hi Superstar on Star Plus along with music composers, Vishal and Shekar.
After her second film, the blockbuster Om Shanti Om, Farah took a break to give birth to triplets -- Diva, Anya and Czar --and is now thrilled to be on the show. She tells us about it:
What made you take up this show?
What interested me about this show is that nobody is a bad singer. We are not selecting from fresh talent. The contestants are either winners or runners-up [The show will have contestants from old shows like Amul Star Voice of India, Indian Idol, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and Fame Gurukul competing against each other]. We're selecting the best.
What are the criteria to judge a show?
As I told you, we are looking for fresh talent. Since all have been good at one point, we will find it difficult to judge the best singer. I will treat everyone as a fresher. The judgement will be purely based on that particular day's performance, and not on their popularity.
How difficult it is to judge a reality show?
I will judge with honesty and integrity, as there is no pressure from anyone. I have to be myself and do not have to learn anything. Only, I hate the make-up! Do you think participants will be happy with one winner?
I hope so, else it is going to look like a boxing match!
Will we get to see a lot of drama like the other reality shows?
I love the drama on reality shows. Judges walking out and fights between the judges, I enjoy it. But on this show, we will do something different to entertain people. You will probably see the singers fighting and creating drama, as they are celebrities too.
What did you like about the show?
I liked the concept. That is why so many reality shows are coming up. I am a reality show junkie myself and I watch them all on television. I have watched Roadies, Jhoom India, Chote Ustad and Shava Shava. If the channels are coming out with new reality shows, it is obviously because people are watching it.
What is the USP of this show?
I think the USP of the show is the voting pattern. Most of the reality shows have the audience selecting or eliminating the contestants. But in this case, 50 percent of the judgment is in the hands of the jury. This is one of the reasons why I signed the contract.
Also, the singers participating in this show are excellent and at least this time, I will miss my favourite part -- I won't have to hear any bad singers.
Do you think this kind of voting pattern will crown the most deserving singer?
Even if you have the best judges like Lata Mangeshkar or [the late] R D Burman, people have their own opinions. In this show, 50 percent of the authority is given to the jury and 50 percent to the audience, unlike other shows where the audience have all the power.
In our country, everyone has been part of a reality show. They are interactively taking part in the shows by voting, that is why these shows are popular.
It has been seen that a lot of the judges of reality shows have no background in the pertinent field. So why are they asked to judge?
I agree. I am a choreographer and don't have much knowledge about music. But given a chance, I would love to judge a dance reality show. I started my stint as a judge with Indian Idol, so by now I have gained some knowledge about music from my colleagues, who were present on the show.
Do the winners get to sing for Bollywood?
Shreya Ghosal, Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan are all winners of music shows. They have a lot of alternate careers like live shows, albums, world tours... It is not necessary that they become playback singers. This is just a platform for them.
How will you balance this show with your babies?
I have to shoot only once a week. That is one of the reasons I have accepted this show. I have helpers, my mother and mother-in-law to take care of them.
What is your experience as a mother?
I am really having fun with my kids. I change the decoration of my babies' room once a month so that they don't get bored.
When will you announce your next film?
Next year. I already have a half-written story. But it will not be a thriller.
